Key Considerations in Animal Facility Design:
1. Ventilation and Air Quality: Proper air circulation and
filtration systems are essential for maintaining healthy conditions
for animals and reducing the spread of airborne pathogens.
Ventilation systems, such as heating, ventilation, and air
conditioning (HVAC), should maintain consistent air quality and
temperature, preventing stress or health issues in the animals
(Besch, 1980). Clean air contributes to better animal health
outcomes and enhances the reliability of research findings (Wenke et
al., 2018).
2. Biosecurity: Implementing robust biosecurity protocols prevents
contamination and ensures that animals are protected from diseases,
which is critical to maintaining a healthy research environment
(Chen & Trundy, 2019). High biosecurity standards reduce the risks
posed by pathogens, which can disrupt research outcomes by affecting
animal physiology (Hessler & Leary, 2009).
3. Cage Design and Enrichment: Providing appropriately sized cages
and environmental enrichment reduces animal stress and promotes
natural behaviors, leading to more reliable research results
(Bloomsmith et al., 2018). Enrichment programs contribute to the
animals\’ psychological well-being, which is essential in research
environments to minimize behavioral issues and improve data quality.
4. Waste Management: Efficient waste disposal systems are necessary
to maintain hygiene and prevent cross-contamination within the
facility. Proper sanitation protocols and systems are critical for
ensuring the health of both the animals and the staff working in
these environments (Fang, 2009).
Effective facility management includes regular monitoring of these

care and research quality.
